They just turn him out onto the streets with two pennies and a ball of lint in his pocket. Tom’s profoundly disinterested case worker decides that he’s no longer a threat to society.even though he’s clearly wound tighter than a crab’s asshole. Tom is sent away to an 80’s movie-style looney bin (terrible lighting, hallways lined with drooling patients with soiled hospital gowns, etc.) After 25 years in the tank, pre-teen Tom has grown into 44 year-old Gary Busey. So what does Tom do? He burns the goddamn house down, killing both of his parents. Tom, who did not enjoy being beaten, would hide.so his dad would yell “where’s Tom!? Why is he always hiding!?” Maybe because he doesn’t appreciate the hourly haymakers, ya dense prick! I thought maybe his mom would help Tom evade the old man’s wrath but nah-she’s just as bad! Tom leaves his crayons out and his mom is all “why’d you leave the crayons out!? I told you to pick up the crayons, TOM!!” Then she burns him with a lit cigarette like “tssssssss!!!!” (“See this is what you get in MY house when you spill paint in the garage!”-John Bender). His dad was a mean fuckin’ drunk who would come have a few belts and then take out his WWII agressions on Tom. ![]() It’s quite a bit of information too so pay attention! In 1964 there was a little boy named Tom Sykes who lived with his mom and dad (natch). ![]() Instead, we have to look at a slideshow of chicken scratch doodles while about five minutes of voice overs set up the storyline. Sure enough-the opening montage, set 25 years before the events in this film, was not actually filmed. What happens in Hider in the House is this: as soon as we see the Vestron Pictures logo we know we’re in serious B-movie territory. Look, the man has lived a life! That we can all agree on. I feel like the less I know, the better). He recovered well enough to play fit-as-a-fiddle FBI agent Angelo Pappas in 1991’s Point Break so life is full of happy endings, right? If you discount the drug overdoses and Celebrity Apprentice and Slap Shot 2 and Busey’s recent stint as a pet court judge (note: this last thing is, somehow, a real thing. In late 1988, Busey wrecked his motorcycle and sustained a brain injury that left his personality turned up to 11 hundred million TRILLION!!! Speaking to People Magazine about his crash in 2020, Busey had this to say: “Yeeeeee!!!” (actual quote). He even nabbed an Oscar nomination for his performance in The Buddy Holly Story. He lived with his personality turned up to 11 but he was a legit talent who could act, sing, and play guitar. The line on this big tall Texan, with his sandy blonde hair, equine features, and a mouthful of teeth, is that he was always crazier than a shithouse rat. You see-there’s a hider….and he’s in the house! He’s hiding in the house! He’s a HIDER in the HOUSE! Do we think the person who came up with the idea for this film had that title in his mind from the jump or was he just completely unable to think of anything better? Anyway, it took me a good while to track down a copy, and when I finally did, I was pants shittingly terrified to discover that the hider in said house is none other than GARY BUSEY!!! Holy Christ in heaven and all 12 of the apostles!! Now there’s a one-sentence pitch you can send your kids to college with: Gary Busey is hiding in your house! Forecast: raining cash money. HIDER IN THE HOUSE "A tense psychological suspense film which cannily explores family politics with sour wit and distinctly macabre conclusions.A few years back, some friends recommended that I take a look at the 1989 thriller Hider in the House, knowing how much I love movies with obscenely literal titles. Builds to such a pitch that I jumped sky-high.” THE LONDON JOURNAL Well-acted and real hide-behind-the fingers stuff. ![]() Though on paper it sounds too daft to be true, the way the tale unfolds it is all too plausible. "A well crafted story about a dangerous mental patient who hides in the attic of a beautiful house. Patrick confidently directs with a good deal of thought and intelligence." VARIETY What makes the difference is that director Matthew Patrick has taken trouble to explore fully the background of his villain-protagonist Tom Sykes (Played by Gary Busey), and despite his violent actions there is still an underlying sense of sympathy for him. "HIDER IN THE HOUSE is an intelligent, gripping psychological thriller. Gary Busey, as an ill-treated and psychopathic adult living like a fugitive in the attic above a well-adjusted family's suburban house, is infused with just the right degree of humanity and confusion while the audience is allowed to tune into two distinct worlds, one of affection and domestication, the other of a wild isolation which craves contact." FILM MONTHLY HIDER IN THE HOUSE: "Solid performances, intriguing plot and an interesting play on the 'villain or victim?' theme make director Matthew Patrick's film a delight trimmed with cunning and terror.
